I saw a model of the mother ship from Close Encounters at the Smithsonian years ago. I wondered why, but was grateful to be able to see it. I guess I reasoned that SciFi was a driver of science, and so the two are connected. Great Easter egg on that ship... a miniature C-3P0 and R2D2 were attached to the outer rim top side! SciFi congratulating itself!

Adam, loved this. The skeptic community can definitely be intense, militant, and very silly when it comes to words and definitions. Bart Ehrman, a great new testament scholar and skeptic, has really defined and differentiated "atheism" and "agnosticism" in a way that makes more sense than anything else I've heard, and I often refer to his definitions when asked about religion or faith. Ehman states that the two words are actually best used to describe two very different things - knowledge and belief. If someone asks "do you know if there's a god?" and you say "I don't know" - then you are agnostic (from the Greek gnosis/knowledge). If someone asks if you believe in a god - well no, you don't, so you are an atheist by definition - because atheism is defining a belief. At the end of the day, I don't even think "atheism" should be a word - there's not really any other examples of words we have for not holding a belief. It's also able to be used in misleading ways very easily - Christians in particular love to talk about "atheists" as if we are a religious group, when the fact of the matter is we don't have anything inherently more in common than we do with all the other people that don't believe in Santa.

Hmmm, I would say baking can be just as much of an art, as anytime you have taste and different ingredients and temperatures involved there's plenty of space to explore and try and adjust to get it just the way you want it (or to invent something wholly new!). Not to mention how altitude or humidity or evenness of heat or convection can affect the baking process... As with many of the best things in life, cooking/baking/food prep has it's knowledge and fundamental bits (the science) and the application/doing (the art) merged together into a single glorious practice. :)

Wonderfully vulnerable. I do think that the truth statement "I can't know something doesn't exist" is illogical. I know a female president of the USA doesn't exist, also I believe that our emotion can color our science as much it can color our stories. So, you have to ask "who has most been willing to die for what they believe to be true?"

The disintegration of the original replica of the Mercury suit is a nod to universal atrophy. I’ve been collecting relatively modern electronics and it’s a struggle to keep things running or resurrect them. Can’t fight universal atrophy but It places a responsibility to document what is working in the here and now and simply enjoy vintage devices while they still work.

I never would have expected, watching Mythbusters all those years ago, that my views on atheism, scientific thinking, meditation, consciousness, Buddhism, and Jesus' teachings would have aligned so well with Adam's. That's actually really neat to realize. I have been looking more into Alan Watt's lately, but I will have to check out the other author's mentioned here as well.

One thing that made me smile about this video was the weathering - yes, it makes the model look awesome. But in the game, these little Interceptors are constantly getting blapped and remade, so they probably have an average lifespan measured in hours, and would never actually get weathered, just exploded and rebuilt again :P

The salt technique is called "Salt Masking." There's another variation where you spray hairspray on the model and the salt will stick to the hairspray. Then you can remove the salt by brushing it off under gently running warm water.

You can be an atheist to any particular god while being agnostic to the fact that a god exists. Can we all safely agree Zeus does not exist? If so, you are an atheist when it comes to Zeus. This is why blanket atheists say I'm just an atheist to one more god or set of gods than you are. Personally, I prefer to label myself as something I do believe in rather than something I do not. Therefore I call myself an altruistic humanist. Basically, I choose to believe in the power of the goodness of the human character to overcome its darker natures, and that humanity is ultimately responsible for itself rather than relying on the intervention of some supernatural being..
